A New Teaching

Apparently I did not save the text of my sermon from 1/29. I do have an outline and the audio. Click the Title for the audio file. The outline is below.

A New Teaching
· Reality shows. I’ve watched some. Like a few.

· Popular theme – change life, improve circum.
· Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Reno, build.
· Other’s use this theme.
· Super Nanny. Intervention. Clean House. Hoarders
· I’ve watched them, like some more than others.
· Leave me with one thought. I wonder if it lasted?
· Addicts relapse? Hoarders collecting?
· I want to see the follow up show. 1 year, 2 years.
· Miracles. Did Jesus follow up? What impact?
· John 9. He followed up. With blind man because he was being harassed. Others? What happened?
· Today’s reading. Who is he? Where? What?
· Don’t know. But story tells us imp. Things about J.
· Mark 1:21-28
· Whirlwind of Mark. 20 verses. 6 stories. John. Baptism. Temptation. John’s arrest. Jesus preaches. Calls disciples.
· Now to Capernaum. To the synagogue.
· Jesus goes. Begins to teach. People are amazed.
· Teaches with authority. Like no one they’ve heard.
· Amidst his teaching. Man appears. Look? Smell? Cried out. Loud, talkin to himself?
· Paducah, downtown church. Homeless people.
· Goes to Jesus. “What do you want Jesus?”
· Casts out spirit. People are amazed again.
· What is this new teaching? Who is this guy? Rumors.
· No one knows what to think. Except unclean spirit.
· Messianic secret in Mark. Don’t tell. Keep silent.
· Demons know him. On more than one occasion, demons call Jesus by name. Testify.
· The people don’t know. Amazed by teaching, but that amazement doesn’t lead to anything.
· Amazed astonished. Rumors begin. No one understands his authority. No one sees the source.
· Even the disciples are slow to get it. Chapter 8.
· We all miss Jesus. We all fali to understand auth.
· Jesus amazed. He taught with authority. Exousia from verb meaning “it is free.” Taught with freedom.
· J donesn’t teach like scribes. What?
· Scribes and Pharisees taught traditions. Passd on.
· Regurgitate interpretations from others.
· Jesus gave his own interpretation with confidence.
· "Scribal authority was based on their ability to recite the opinion of many Rabbis on a given topic. J's word had authority because when he spoke, it came to pass" Richard Jensen
· Actions reinforced authority.
· No fear of unclean. Unclean was unpopular. Touch & you’re unclean. Jesus spent time with unclean. Unconcerned about public opinion. Just did God’s w.
· Trust Jesus authority. Don’t miss him. Do God’s work
